What Size Is the Grid in 2048?

The original 2048 uses a 4×4 grid - 16 cells in total. This is the standard format that the game was originally designed around and remains the most-played version.

Grid sizes on 2048.now

2048.now offers three competitive grid sizes, each with its own global leaderboard and separate ranked season:

  • Classic 4×4 - 16 tiles. Fastest games (3–10 minutes). The original format. Best for learning the core mechanics.
  • Large 5×5 - 25 tiles. Longer games. Higher achievable tile values. More room to recover from bad spawns.
  • Expert 6×6 - 36 tiles. Longest games. The highest potential scores and tiles. Significantly more complex board management required.

Which grid size is right for you?

Most players start on 4×4 Classic and move to 6×6 Expert once they consistently reach 4096+ on the standard board. The 6×6 grid is popular among top-ranked competitive players because the larger board makes extreme scores (1,000,000+) more achievable.
