Where Did 2048 Come From?

2048 was created by Gabriele Cirulli, an Italian web developer, and released on 9 March 2014 as a free, open-source browser game on GitHub. Cirulli was 19 years old at the time and built the game over a single weekend.

From weekend project to viral hit

Cirulli originally described 2048 as a clone of the mobile game Threes! (released February 2014), though the mechanics are different enough that they are considered distinct games. Within days of release, 2048 had been played millions of times. It was picked up by tech blogs, spread across social media, and became one of the fastest-spreading browser games in internet history.

Open-source origins

Because Cirulli released 2048 under the MIT licence, the source code was immediately available for anyone to copy, modify, and redistribute. This led to an explosion of variants, remakes, and adaptations - From different grid sizes to themed versions featuring characters, foods, and celebrities.

2048.now

2048.now is a modern, competitive reimagining of the original concept - adding ranked play, progression systems, cosmetics, and multiplayer modes while keeping the core tile-merging mechanics that made the original famous.
