Gabriele Cirulli creates 2048

In March 2014, Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli released 2048 as a free, open-source web game over a single weekend. It was inspired by Threes! (by Asher Vollmer) and 1024 (by Veewo Studio). Cirulli posted it on GitHub - it went viral within days, reaching 4 million players in under a week.

2048 spread through social media and tech communities faster than almost any browser game before it. The simple rules - merge tiles of the same number, reach 2048 - proved universally accessible while hiding deep strategic depth. Forks and variants

Competitive 2048 emerges
