What Is the Objective of 2048?

The nominal objective is to create a tile with the value 2048 by merging matching numbered tiles. Every time two tiles with the same value collide, they merge into a single tile worth double - Two 64-tiles become a 128, two 1024-tiles become a 2048.

Beyond the 2048 tile

Reaching 2048 triggers a win notification, but the game does not end. On 2048.now you can dismiss the win screen and keep playing toward 4096, 8192, 16384, and beyond. Competitive players chase the highest possible score - Not just the 2048 tile - Because every merge above 2048 is worth more points than the entire first half of the game combined.

The real objective in competitive play

On 2048.now's global leaderboard, the objective is the highest score rather than simply reaching 2048. Score is the sum of all merged tile values throughout the game. Two players who both reach 8192 can have dramatically different scores depending on how efficiently they played getting there.
